Recommended Barcode Scanner for Visual-Eyes Inventory: Setting up the Scan Avenger SA 3600

The ScanAvenger SA3600 series is the recommended barcode scanner for use with the Visual-Eyes Inventory module. This scanner is purchased directly by clinics and does not require additional software installation.

There are a number of different ScanAvenger models. The one we have tested with is the 3600 series. It is possible that other models would work the same way, but we cannot guarantee compatibility.

Scanner Setup

This scanner is fairly basic in operation and has no extra software. It is controlled by scanning barcodes that tell it what to do. There are three codes that will be primarily used.

Note: Save the control barcode image to your computer for easy reference so you can scan the codes directly from the screen. In the future, this may be included directly in the Inventory module.

Storage Mode

The scanner by default will try and send each barcode as they are scanned. This tells the scanner to store the barcodes internally instead. The scanner will remember this setting, so it should only need to be scanned once during the setup process.

Important: It looks like you need to have the scanner unplugged before it will go into Storage Mode. In some cases, the scanner does not recognize the barcode on the image and works better scanning the one in the manual.

Data Clear

This clears any scanned frame information currently in the scanner. This should be done prior to beginning an inventory scan.

Data Upload

This dumps all the scanned frames out as if it were coming from a keyboard. You will want to create a new text document and put the cursor in it before scanning this barcode. It should output the frame information in the correct format to be read by Visual-Eyes.

Connection Options

This scanner comes with a base station, but the easiest option for uploading is to plug the scanner into the computer directly, as it can be tricky to scan the control codes while the scanner is docked.

Bluetooth Connection

There is also a Bluetooth option where the scanner can be paired with a Bluetooth dongle that comes with the kit and can be inserted into the base station. This would be the cleaner installation option but is a bit more complicated.

Common Issues

Issue: Scanner will not enter Storage Mode.

Fix: Ensure the scanner is unplugged from the USB cable before scanning the Storage Mode barcode. If the scanner does not recognize the barcode from the image, try scanning the barcode directly from the printed manual.

Issue: Data Upload does not output frame information.

Fix: Ensure you have created a new text document and placed the cursor in it before scanning the Data Upload barcode. Verify that the scanner has been set to Storage Mode.

Tip: Always scan the Data Clear barcode before beginning a new inventory scan to ensure no previous data remains in the scanner. Keep the control barcode image easily accessible on your computer for quick reference during setup and use.
